The greatest of these is Love….

Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said “ God’s dream is that you and I and all of us will realise that we are family, that we are made for togetherness, for goodness and for compassion.”
These words are so appropriate at this time, are they not?
Yesterday we heard of the 4th and 5th deaths of people from the Covid 19 virus and perhaps you heard some of their loved ones speaking. Such brokenness and such pain. But along with these things, we heard anger and frustration. Why are some people not listening to the government and the medical profession? Why are they still behaving selfishly, thinking only of themselves?
This is the day to be reminded of the simple but profound truth of Scripture- “ Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” ( 1 John 3:18).
The choice is ours- yours and mine. Are we going to love – with ‘agape’ love? In other words unconditional , selfless love? We are seeing lots of examples of this at the moment- NHS key workers who are caring for those diagnosed with Covid 19, neighbours checking in with each other’s to help if needed, congregations like ours where people are volunteering to serve those who are 70 years and over and members still contributing to Storehouse NI, giving food and financial donations to help those who are most vulnerable. We’ve heard so many wonderfully encouraging stories.
But we’ve also heard of the other stories- the scams, the stock piling, the companies and individuals making money off the backs of vulnerable people.
You and I have to make a choice today- think of ourselves first and only or share ‘agape’ love ? The stakes are high- in fact they will have eternal consequences!
Jesus is the ultimate example of ‘agape’ love- dying on the cross for our forgiveness, for our eternal salvation…being selfless and loving us unconditionally. He calls us to reflect Him in all we do and say (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Will you be the hands and feet of Jesus today?
Lord Jesus, help me to make kind, loving choices today. Please give me opportunities to serve and reflect you no matter where I am. Show me and teach me to respond with kindness on the phone, on social media and at a social distance. Lord, help me to bless people today and in so doing, to bless you. In Jesus name Amen.
